Definition

To stand out of the action when things get ugly. It can also mean that you have been put out of action, as in " ... you are sidelined ..." indicating that you are no longer considered an "A" Player and will not be considered for a promotion any time soon.

Todd was sidelined after he ran that marketing campaign that wasted all that money with no benefit
